That was a tactic the King Soopers employee union in Colorado took when it sought higher wages and better benefits. “They were also able to see (people) who complained about the pandemic while enjoying a very luxurious life. Quit all together free#They had more free time so they had the opportunity to engage in more ranting and observe what other people were doing,” Padilla said. “I do think that the pandemic forced more people to stay at home, which exposed them to more social media. Quit all together plus#With new options plus pandemic benefits, such as federal relief checks and unemployment, workers also had time to make decisions, which is a bit unusual, said Alex Padilla, an economics professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver. Employers had to offer higher wages to attract new applicants. Infections took out or quarantined multiple workers simultaneously, leaving staffing shortages and causing restaurants to limit their hours. As companies reopened and began hiring last year, they competed for the same workers. In 2019, quit rates were around 2.5%.īusiness disruptions caused by COVID’s spread have not abated. Colorado quit rates, at 3.5% in November, are still quite high. It’s better to step back and look at it longer term. The numbers also don’t include the surge in COVID cases due to the omicron variant. Gedney cautioned against reading too much into the month-to-month change, since it’s based on small samples and could be revised. “And let’s be honest here, it’s all driven by the pandemic.” “This is probably the most disruptive - and I don’t mean disruptive in a negative way - but disruptive labor market that we’ve seen in our lifetimes,” said Ryan Gedney, a senior economist at the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. figures were the opposite - quit rates and the number of job openings were up. That aligned with other trends showing employers in Colorado making more hires and posting fewer job openings in the same period. Though Colorado had the nation’s highest rate of job quitters in October at 4% of all private nonfarm workers, fewer quit in November, according to the monthly Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. “Many of us before just tried to fit our lives into our work and this pandemic has caused us to reassess that relationship and try to fit work into our lives.” Quit all together upgrade#“This moment that we’re in could more accurately be called the Great Reassessment or even the Great Upgrade because these workers are resigning and they’re using this time to rethink the relationship between work and their life,” said Luke Pardue, an economist with payroll service provider Gusto. The Great Resignation moniker is a bit of a misnomer, economists say. “My beliefs and values and principles are no longer congruent with those of the hospital for which I was working my ass off.” Nancy Johnson, a Carbondale resident who quit her job after 10 years as a medical biller, now works from home. Workers are moving to something better - and not just for their bottom line. While the pandemic was difficult for many employers and workers, the convergence of numerous job opportunities in a recovering economy combined with workers emboldened by choice has created a unique period in American labor history. She’s excited about her future as a medical provider advocate, a business she’s thought about starting for three years. Johnson may be part of the so-called Great Resignation, but she hasn’t given up.

Features of AirtableĪirtable has a few features to help you store and organize your data.Īn Airtable Workspace contains Bases, which contain all your project information. Think of Airtable as a cross between excel and a database that’s loaded with more features. Information stored on Airtable can be filtered and manipulated, helping you to better visualize large amounts of information. With its cloud database solution, Airtable gives you the ability to build anything from simple to very complex databases to organize all of your information.īuilding databases usually require help from engineers, but with Airtable, you can create these databases without having to worry about coding at all. If you don’t organize your information well, it can lead to a lower productivity level in your company. Howie Liu, Andrew Ofstad, and Emmet Nicholas founded the company in 2012 as a solution for businesses to better organize their information digitally. Let’s say your content writing team wants to create a Grid just for them: they have the option to filter out any records that aren’t blog content, and they would also be able to hide columns that don’t pertain to them (such as the Caption column or the Email Recipients column).Airtable is a hybrid tool that merges spreadsheet functionality with database storage capabilities. It’s similar to a spreadsheet and is the best option for looking over a lot of information easily. The Grid View is what we’ve been working with throughout this post. Once you’ve set up your table, it’s time to organize it, and one of the easiest ways to start doing that is with Views.Īirtable offers multiple Views for users to choose from, allowing every team member to see and use your shared information in a way that feels most comfortable for them. This means that, rather than scrolling through a traditional spreadsheet that’s swamped with extraneous information, you’re able to see what you need in a convenient, efficient way. My best advice is to get your hands dirty and dig in as I’ve said before, Airtable is super user-friendly, so you’ll be able to pick it up in no time.Īirtable’s magic lies in its ability to showcase shared information in a way that is most convenient for its viewer. The date field type allows you to build a calendar with ease, and a URL field type automatically hyperlinks whatever is in the cell. For instance, using the long form text field type allows you to store and view large amounts of text in a convenient way. Your best option is to start building in Grid View the way you would a normal spreadsheet, but be sure to explore the different field types.ĭifferent field types have different capabilities. Starting an Airtable from scratch can be a bit intimidating, but the tool is truly so user-friendly. If you choose to start with a template, Airtable will take you to their page of “starter bases” where you can browse through their wide array of templates (you can also head to Universe, where you can explore community-published bases from big names around the world like Zapier, Expedia Flights, Insomniac Events and Creative Circle). When you select “Add a Base,” Airtable will prompt you with three different options: start with a template, import a spreadsheet or start from scratch. As I’ve said before, I’m going to walk you through creating your own editorial calendar from scratch and an existing sheet, but feel free to start with a template if that works better for you! It can fulfill subconscious aesthetic user needs. It can enhance customer navigation capabilities. It can also serve to increase the strength of elements such as calls-to-action. This habit isn't an eccentric quirk, though. Yet Ruffin routinely goes through them all, reading each and every one. The workload before him is quite unusual for a multi-billion empire owner: it's a massive stack of customer reviews. At 5 am, while the Las Vegas Strip is still waiting for sunrise, Ruffin is already suited and sitting at his desk. Always Pay Attention to Customer ReviewsĪlthough Ruffin is well in his 80s, the billionaire still starts his workday earlier than his employees. This advice will undoubtedly prove more than beneficial for every hospitality entrepreneur seeking success. In this article, we'll share a list of leadership tips that come directly from Phillip Ruffin. And his success in the industry makes him the ideal person to listen to when it comes to hoteliers looking for business advice. Today, Ruffin is the owner of the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino and a hotel division worth $2.5 billion. And nine years later, Ruffin would go on to sell the property for a sum over seven times that of his investment. That year, he spent a whopping $165 million to buy the New Frontier Hotel and Casino. Ruffin already had Marriotts in several federal states when he made one of his first considerable purchases in 1998. And while branching out, Ruffin acquired a Marriott in Wichita, which marked the beginning of his involvement in the hospitality industry. He decided to expand his entrepreneurship into real estate, buying office parks, strip malls, and, most importantly, hotels. The starting success didn't slow Ruffin down. However, Ruffin didn't work as an employee this time – he started buying stores outright. He initially sold hamburgers with friends but he soon made enough profit to switch to the convenience store industry after some time. Phillip Ruffin started his career after dropping out of college. That's why entrepreneurs should listen when an experienced and successful industry veteran shares his advice. Managing a hotel business is a complex task that involves a broad range of skills.
